| Google's Q1 Gangbusters
Google's first quarter saw enormous gains in both revenues and profits
as it soaked up even greater shares of online - and for that matter,
general - advertising budgets. Posting profits of $369 million (up
about 600 percent) on revenues of $1.26 billion
(up 93 percent), the search giant blew away analyst expectations.
Profits proved to be $1.29 per share against expectations of $0.92
per share. After market stock trading saw Google rise about eight
percent, approaching its all-time high.
Yahoo Profits Soar on Back of Online Advertising
Yahoo reported earnings of $205 million on revenues of $1.17
billion for the first quarter of 2005, compared with net
income of $101 million on revenues of $758 million in the year-ago
quarter, ClickZ reported. Marketing services revenue rose 54 percent
to $1,025 million for the quarter, representing all but $149 million
of total revenue. Yahoo attributed much of the revenue growth to
increased online advertising from large offline brand advertisers,
especially those in consumer packaged goods and financial services.
It also noted an increase in demand for rich media ads. The New
York Times wrote that Yahoo's international revenues were $355 million,
up 124 percent. Its domestic revenue was $819 million, up 37 percent.
Ask Jeeves Posts Higher Profit
Reuters has details of Ask Jeeves' first quarter numbers. Web search
company Ask Jeeves Inc. on Wednesday posted a quarterly profit that
beat expectations, but its shares slipped less than 1 percent after
it forecast current-quarter earnings below Wall Street's consensus
targets.
Ask Jeeves had first-quarter net income of $18.1 million, or 26
cents a share, compared with year-earlier net of $13.4 million,
or 23 cents. Revenue jumped to $94.9 million from
$39.2 million.
