Generic terms are greater opportunity With regard to the use of merchants' brands vs. generic keywords, the research shows that generic phrases overwhelmingly dominate shopping-related searches. Generic keywords made up, on the low side, 72% of searches for apparel products to 82% for computer hardware on the high side. Moreover, most people never used merchants' brands (or variations thereof, including misspellings) at all. For the apparel category, 87% of respondents used a generic phrase while searching for apparel products, while less than 50% used a variation of the brand name.
