3 Common Optimisation Mistakes;

Failure to do adequate Keyword Research;

If you are developing a website don’t you think it would be a good idea to make sure you are focussing on the most relevant and high traffic keywords?
For example goldcoast or gold coast, which one should you focus on? In google.com.au there are 15,600,000 pages for gold coast whereas goldcoast has 287,000. Another thing to watch out for with keywords is singular versus plural.

Where to start with keyword research? Search for your keyword in Google, check out the top 5 sites, view source of these sites homepages and copy all their keywords from meta name = keywords. Then try putting these keywords into Google at https://adwords.google.com/select/main?cmd=KeywordSandbox. Then take your growing list and go to Yahoo and check demand http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/?mkt=au. I like to have a column for no of pages in google also. Then sort these in excel and build 25 + pages for the top keys. Content is King. Another thing is look for 2 or 3 keyword phrases where you can, these can be the best keys.

Download time / Page size

I am not a big fan of most web designers after 11 years in this business I cannot believe what is still getting built. Flash intro pages that take 30 secs to load, 500k homepages etc etc un-believable. Size matters ! make your pages small 50-100k and thereby fast to load in the end users web browser. If your site is slow to load, you may lose that visitor before they even get presented with anything!

Incoming links

Links really make a difference especially in Google, think it will be easy to get good links? Think again it takes time, thats right work and some knowledge on how to do it correctly. Link worthy content is a very good start, posting articles is another strategy. The anchor text needs to contain the keywords you are targeting. You need to actively seek good links out, or employ someone to work on this for you.

So that’s it in a nutshell, know what the keywords are do the research, then build lots of content and keep adding links. Follow these rules and you will be well on the way to gaining success in the search engines.
