Spammer Gets Slammer
[November 4, 2004] A Virginia jury hands out nine-year prison
term in first U.S. felony spam conviction. US duo in first
spam conviction. A brother and sister in the US have been
convicted of sending hundreds of thousands of unsolicited
e-mail messages to AOL subscribers. It is the first criminal
prosecution of internet spam distributors.
Jurors in Virginia recommended that the man, Jeremy Jaynes,
serve nine years in prison and that his sister, Jessica DeGroot,
be fined $7,500.
They were convicted under a state law that bars the sending
of bulk e-mails using fake addresses.

Online Sales Up
In news on Tuesday, according to projections released by JupiterResearch,
online retail sales will reach $21.6 billion this holiday
season. Such numbers would mark a rise of 19 percent over
2003, the market research firm said.
